The BOPPPS Session Plan Model
The six-stage structure behind a focused, active and checked CBET lesson, with timings you can use straight away.
What a session plan is
A session plan is the detailed plan for one lesson: one row of your Learning Plan, planned minute by minute. Kenyan TVET institutions commonly expect it in the BOPPPS structure, which keeps every lesson outcome-driven and measurable.
The six stages
Bridge-in
A short hook linking the lesson to something trainees know or care about: why this skill matters.
≈ 5–10 minObjectives
Two or three observable outcomes ("identify", "connect", "measure"), drawn from the performance criteria.
≈ 5 minPre-assessment
A quick check of what trainees already know, so you can pitch the lesson right.
≈ 10 minParticipatory learning
The core: demonstration, guided and independent practice, and group tasks. Most of the time goes here.
≈ 70–80 minPost-assessment
Evidence that each objective was met: a short practical task or targeted questions.
≈ 10–15 minSummary
Recap the key points, link to the next session and set any follow-up.
≈ 5–10 minTimings shown for a 120-minute session. Keep the opening and closing tight and give most of the time to practice.
Writing good objectives
| Weak | Better |
|---|---|
| Understand circuits | Identify series, parallel and series-parallel circuits from diagrams |
| Know Ohm's law | Calculate current, voltage or resistance using Ohm's law |
| Learn about PPE | Select and correctly wear the PPE for a soldering task |
Let CBET Planner draft it
Writing a BOPPPS plan by hand for every session is the most repetitive part of a trainer's week. Upload your Learning Plan to Session Plans and get a BOPPPS (or KSTVET) draft matched to the right session, then refine it instead of starting from a blank page. See How to Create a Session Plan.
